Folk Medicine - Listerine and Mosquitos?

I recently received the following post from a friend:

I can't wait to try this in the summer!
I was at a deck party awhile back, and the bugs were having a ball biting everyone. A man at the party sprayed the lawn and deck floor with Listerine, and the little demons disappeared.
The next year I filled a 4-ounce spray bottle and used it around my seat whenever I saw mosquitoes. And voila! That worked as well. It worked at a picnic where we sprayed the area around the food table, the children's swing area, and the standing water nearby.
During the summer, I don't leave home without it.....Pass it on.

So why does this work? If we ask ourselves this then we will realize that the reason this works is NOT because of the Listerine brand but because of the high concentrations of Thyme and Eucalyptus essential oils in the mouthwash formula.

The active ingredients listed on Listerine bottles are menthol, thymol, methyl salicylate, and eucalyptol. Ethanol is present in concentrations of 21.6% in the flavored product and 26.9% in the original gold Listerine Antiseptic. Thymol is an antiseptic, methyl salicylate is a cleaning agent, and menthol is a local anesthetic. At this concentration, the ethanol serves to dissolve the active ingredients.

So...instead of using the slightly toxic mouthwash to rid your area of mosquitoes - consider making your own homemade spray with thyme and eucalyptus oils. And don't forget the sage oil for those horrible itches! (Note: Essential oils should be diluted by 3 drops per 1 TBS. of carrier oil)

Letter to the Editor: Colon Cleanse

Asalaam O Alaikum Wa Rahmatullah.

Sister, I had a question to ask you. ------ is
going to do a colon cleanse with bentonite and
psyllium. He is also having an issue whereby whenever
he drinks water, he has the urge to go. He can hold
it but it is almost as though his bowels don't wait to
get full up so if he drinks, he is basically going to
urinate alot which can be annoying not to mention his
hands get dried up so much that the skin starts to
crack and bleed alittle.
Do you think it will be OK to do the cleanse since he
will be on a liquid diet?

If you think this condition needs attention then I
will consult you, InshAllah.

Wasalaam, - T

Dear T,

Wa Aleikum Asalam...

It sounds a little complex for a short answer. I would recommend that he get a consultation from me or from someone else to completely evaluate his situation. However...I do have a few general comments:

1. You mention he does not hold his water. Is this just because he is on a liquid diet right now or does he typically drink a lot and urinate a lot? If so, then he needs to be evaluated by a health care practitioner because these are serious symptoms usually having to do with the pituitary glandm brain or kidneys.

2. Many people do cleanses while on a liquid diet - as long as they are in very good health, are very strong, are being monitored by a health care practitioner and they have "eased" into the cleanse before hand with a pre-cleanse.

Hope this helps!

Beekeeping Photos from Karima & Carle

And the Lord taught the Bee to build its cells in hills, in trees, and in men’s habitats; then to eat of all the produce and find with the skill the precious paths of its Lord: there issues from within their bodies a drink of varying colours, wherein is healing for men; verily this is a sign for those who give thought. - Qur'an sura ‘The Bee’ in ayyats 68 and 69.

Dear Sisters & Brothers,

I wanted to share these photos with you from a friend in SA (South Africa). Her family keeps bees on their property and she says it is very easy. This is something I dream of doing. Bees are such a blessed creature and yet the mass-production of honey is so harmful to them (and to us). It would be so wonderful if more of us could start a little project like this in our backyards!

I know that in my town here we also have a local beekeeping club that helps people start projects like this. If you are interested you might want to look into local chapters of this club. For now, you can be inspired by Carle and Karl...

Herbal Fairytales are NOW HERE!

I am very happy to announce that the long awaited first book in my series of Herbal Fairytales is now ready for purchase!

Each book tells a fairytale about the herb that incorporates the appearance and medicinal uses of the herb into the story itself. This is a wonderful way for children AND adults to learn about herbal healing. Additionally, each book has been illustrated by a Waldorf classroom, led by their main teacher, and is not only a visual treat, but a guide for you to use if you want to turn the story into a main lesson and water-color painting session for your own classroom.
Finally, each book includes a child-friendly recipe for the herb.

Anyone who purchases this book will also receive FREE the E-books "Waldorf Watercolor Painting" AND "A Year of Waldorf Watercolor Painting" - a $12.00 value.

(If you have already purchased these e-books you can choose two other e-books to receive for free, however, no refunds will be available).

Book One is called Red Clover and is available NOW!

Rather than have you pay for the costs of on demmand publishing and inflated shipping costs I will be making a large order of these books on April 15th and will send them out to people via Media Mail. This will save everyone $6.00 on the cost of the book. However, because I need to order a set of books at one time to be sent to me I am taking pre-orders at this time so I know how many books to order in the first shipment.

This is a 9 x 7" softcover full-color book with 39 original watercolor paintings that you and your children will learn from as well as enjoy reading and gazing at for many hours. Paintings were done by the children of the 5th and 6th grade class at the Four Winds School in the suburbs of Chicago. They were paid to be illustrators of the book as a class fundraising project.
You can pre-order this book for only $17.50 plus $3.50 shipping and handling by sending payment to: herbnhome@yahoo.com via Paypal OR by paying at the Herb'n Home Amazon Paypage (please send a note if you pay via Amazon as they do not alert me).

To ship anywhere outside the USA will cost $7.50. If you are purchasing other items from The Dream Angels EBAY then I can put this book in your shipment with other items and the shipping will be FREE.

Please pass this note on to your friends! Thank you!

What is the difference between Herbs and Homeopathy? LETTER TO THE EDITOR

RE: What is the major difference between herbal remedies and homeopathy? Can they both be taken simutanously? - MK

Dear MK,

The major differences between herbal and homeopathic remedies are this:

1. Herbal remedies work on a physical level as well as an energetic level (although many herbalists ignore this energetic level), homeopathic medicine works on an energetic level and not on a physical level. It is the energy vibration of the medicine that is inducing the reaction in the body and not the physical substance. For more information on what an "energy level" is you can visit : https://www.hado.net/

Emoto's work on water illustrates what "energetic level" means better than any description I have ever heard in the world of homeopathy.

2. Homeopathic remedies treat on the theory that Like Heals Like. So, when you give a homeopathic remedy for a "fever and red cheeks with sweating that came on suddenly" you will give a remedy that causes "fever and red cheeks with sweating that comes on suddenly" in healthy test subjects.

J is right in that you can use them together. However, you do have to wait a half hour before taking any herbal remedies (just as you do with taking ANY substance with homeopathic remedies...not just herbs) and you need to avoid herbs with very strong smells like Valerian or Mint.

I don't usually use both, however, as I work mostly with "single" remedies. I like to keep things simple and get a real feel for what each remedy or herb does on its own. For this reason, I try each remedy apart from another one so I can tell which one is doing what. If I gave belladona (homeopathic) for a fever and then I gave the same person hibiscus tea (for a fever) and the fever went down I would not know which one worked better. Most of the time I find that if you can get to know a remedy or an herb very very well (and this takes time and patience) you can usually use just one thing and it will work very well.

However, when I was first learning about healing and sometimes when my kids are very sick and I don't want to wait around to see what happens...I used to dose with everything and was just glad when one of them worked!

Consulting Clip: Excerpt from Consultation on Stomach Problems

Dear Readers,

The following is only an excerpt and is not a complete consultation. If you have stomach issues yourself you should consult your health care practitioner. I am posting this to give you some ideas. This was a response to one of my consulting clients as a FOLLOW UP on her initial consultation. She is also consulting with a local health care practitioner so my ideas are supplemental:

Dear Karima,

Following the consultation with you I noticed my daughter also has some stomach problems. She wakes up complaining for about 30 minutes and then she is OK.

Dear Client,

I have some ideas how to help depending on what else you have observed:

1. It could be just that she needs to release from the sleep she was in. A lot of people have aches in the morning because they need to go to the bathroom (either kind) and when they go and release that the stomach ache goes away. I have also found that in SOME people they cannot distinguish between a stomach ache and the urge to go to the bathroom. For them it is so very similar. It is like when they need to go their brain does not tell them to go, but instead sends them a pain signal. If your daughter is this type then you can help her by teaching her to listen to her body more, insist that she go to the bathroom every time you leave the house, before bed, etc...

2. If it is nerves from an event she goes to every day (school) this is also normal. There are a lot of children and adults who get stomach aches when they first wake up because the transition from the safety of the home to the outside world is difficult for them. If she is the type of child who finds transitions difficult then this could be part of the issue. If this is the case then just do your best to wake her up earlier to give her more time to transition so she knows she has more time and perhaps even some time to play in the morning before she goes out. She has a strong need to CENTER herself before going out. You can also start the morning with some calming chamomile tea or perhaps light a lavender candle (REAL lavender) before she wakes up in the morning so the house has a calming feel to it when she wakes up.

3. From all that you have said about her it does not sound like a food or allergy or physical issue in that way so the last thing I would try looking into is if she is getting enough sleep or not. It is very common for people to feel ill upon waking if they do not get enough sleep. I know many people and clients who have this issue. She should be getting 9-10 hours a night and perhaps more. If she is not getting this regularly then her body is not able to complete the cycles of healing and recharging it does every night and she will wake up feeling ill.

Karima

LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Gum Pain

I just finished having surgery on my teeth and am in a lot of pain. Do you have any advice?

I assume that you are consulting with your dentist and are aware of any warning signs of infection that might require you return to his office. Other than that...

For any tooth pain at all I use the homeopathic remedy Hypericum.

The other remedy I use is cloves or clove oil. It is an antibiotic and it numbs the area of pain so you don't feel it. If you have some essential oil of clove put 3 drops in a TBS of olive oil and apply directly to the area with a cotton swab. If you don't have any essential oil then take some whole cloves and simmer them in a little olive oil (don't fry them) for a bit and THEN apply that to the area. You can also just suck on an entire clove (on that side of your mouth). That works too.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Colon Trouble

Ms. Burns,

Assalamwalaikum, I hope you are doing well. I am
writing this e-mail to you with deep concern for my
father. He is almost 70 years old and since I can
remember he had and has a digestive problem,
heartburn, he does not get hungry, constipation and he
is in constant pain (quite literally). He is a
smoker, and there is no chance of him quitting. He
takes numerous amounts of medicines and tries anything
in hope of relieving his suffering due to abdominal
pain. He will eat fruits such as kiwi, prunes, dates
and figs so he can use the restroom. However, I
believe my father is not consistent in taking one type
of medicine. He gave up a long time ago. Are there
any herbs that you can suggest, or anything he could
do so his pain can decrease? Thank you, Jazak Allah.

- MG

Dear MG,

As you already know he does need to stop smoking. Additionally, his problems sound very serious and he should consult a health care practitioner. Meanwhile, please try Aloe Vera juice mixed with juice (to make it taste better). If he takes 2 ounces 3 times a day with juice (start with 2 times a day and then increase to 3 if he needs it) this will help him. You might also consider getting him a full consultation so he has a holistic practitioner look at all his issues together.

You can get Aloe Vera juice at the health food stores but it is much less expensive from the health section of the grocery stores.

If you are not living in the USA then try Psyllium seed powder mixed with juice 2 times a day.

Karima

Parent Child Natural Healing Classes with Hakima Karima

Dear Parents,

Parent-Child Natural Healing Classes ONLINE will be starting on February 1st!
(Scroll down to sign up as a pair, a family or co-op group)

I have been teaching a naturopathic healing class online for 8 years (and offline for more). My children are all old enough to start participating in learning these skills, but the classes I already offer are at a higher level (14-16 years old and up to 150 years) So I will be starting a new series of classes over the next few weeks called "Parent-Child Natural Healing Classes". During these classes we will be learning:

Reflexology
Herbs
Iridology
Nutrition
Typology

These classes will be taught at a child's level and will all include video support. I will be uploading one class every month for the next 5 months. Mothers who have taken these classes "in person" with me before have been thrilled because the classes were so easy for THEM to understand too. Even herbalists and healers were excited to discover new ways of looking at herbs and healing and the kind of reflexology I teach is not American reflexology so it is new too!

How the classes will run:

1. Each month you will receive your video - downloadable online - and class materials and E-books, lesson plans and stories (all online). You will be able to access these materials at any time so even if you don't choose to participate WITH the class you can use these materials even 5 years from now!

2. The entire month we are running the class I will be visiting the online forum (open for the class forever) and I will be present there every Friday at a certain time to participate. You are welcome to join the class in "real time" or you can access the forum and do the class on your own time. I expect there will be enough people doing the class at different times that there will ALWAYS be someone on the forum so these classes are NOT restrained by time but I am adding an element of time to them so that people who want a more LIVE experience can have that.

3. You will be able to either participate in LIVE time or on your own time.

4. The classes do not involve testing, although you are welcome to contact me any time with questions

5. Two certificates of participation will be issued when you finish the series for participants in the class, however, as many children or family members as you like can participate in the classes. However, please do not distribute the class outside of your group as the materials are copyrighted.

6. You must sign up for all of the classes. You can pay all at once or you can pay in installments:

One time price is:
$150.00 payable at:
http://tinyurl.com/2gdrz7
(Ideas: sign up as a co-op group to save money and split the fee between more than one person)

The installment price is (a little more because of the maintenance from my end)
$50.00 for the first installment and then $30.00 a month after the first installment for the next 4 months.
http://tinyurl.com/2zq89k

7. If you want classes with testing and certification for older child or adults visit: www.islamichealingcourse.com

LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Liver Cleanse

Assalaam O Alaikum wa Rahmatullah.
I have been having some indigestion on a regular basis
coupled on occasions with nausea and bloating. I
wonder if perhaps my gaulbladder is the problem and I
am having starting symptoms. I wanted to ask you
about liver cleanses by Dr Hilda Clark with olive oil,
lemon juice and epsom salts. Would you advise this
kind of cleanse? My mother has also recommended me an
auyervedic powder mixture which is supposed to be
good. I am wondering which would be better for me to
do.What would you suggest? - T. in Illinois

Dear T,

The liver cleanse you mentioned is a wonderful way to clean out but I wonder if it might be too intense for you at this point. Usually one does a pre-cleanse before anything so intense and if you do this kind of liver cleanse you can expect to be in bed for a couple hours or on the toilet for a while! So I would recommend it - it is wonderful - but first make sure you are strong enough to handle it and that you have some extra time on your hands. I would say to ease into it by settling your digestive system first. The best and easiest way to do this is to add some aloe Vera juice to some water or juice (I prefer juice because it masks the odd taste) and drinking this 3 times a day (see bottle for dosages). After a week of doing this you should feel better and your body would be ready for the cleanse.

And make sure you drink PLENTY of water during the cleanse. You don't want to cleanse and just have the toxins stay in your body. Water is the element of the cleanse that FLUSHES the toxins once they are released.

I am not sure about the Ayurvedic powder. Do you know what is in it?

Blessings & Health,
Hakima Karima

The following information was added by Anisa Abeytiya:

(Please note that the liver and gallbladder are often cleansed together, so although Hilda Clark mentions this as a Liver Cleanse on the site, it is ALSO a Gallbladder cleanse. Note that Hilda Clark's therapies are often posted on various sites without the disclaimers that Anisa mentions below...so, as with all information, it is good to research)

Asalaam Alikum,

This is actually a gallstone cleanse and it is quite dangerous if someone has a stone because it could obstruct the duct and cause the gallbladder to rupture. I do not know anyone that recommends this because of the legal ramifications.

Our bodies detoxify 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. So it is not something we need to force the body to do. Yet there are times when we do need to help the body along. If your detoxification pathways are not all working, particularly your bowel, you do not want to force detoxification (see my article on detox at www.womenshealingcircle.org) because your body will not be able to remove waste.

A simple glass of water with lemon juice is a wonderful, safe way to help cleans your liver. Green powders are cleansing as well as assist the body to eliminate waste. Drink 3 8oz glasses of water with 1 tablespoon of lemon juice, not with food.

One should never embark on a detoxification program without the assistance of a health professional. Also, those who are pregnant, nursing or planning to become pregnant, those recovering from chronic or acute illness should not embark on a detoxification program.

A tea made with1 part marshmallow and 1 part chamomile are suitable to calm gut inflammation and sooth the stomach.

If you e mail me I can send you a questionnaire to asses Phase I and II of your liver.

Blessings,

Anisa

My Child is Not Sleeping: LETTER TO THE EDITOR

Dear Karima,

I am at my wit’s end with L.’s sleep. I’m pretty close to my breaking point, as I haven’t gotten more than 2 hours of consecutive sleep in the past week, and I cannot remember the last time I slept more than 3 hours in a row. L. is 18 months old, and I sleep with her on a queen sized mattress on the floor in her room. She wakes frequently to nurse. I would be thrilled if she only woke twice to nurse. The past couple of weeks, she has been waking very frequently, like 10+ times a night. I just don’t know what to do. I’ve read several sleep books, including The No Cry Sleep Solution, but NOTHING seems to work. I am so incredibly sleep deprived, and her sleep habits just seem to be getting worse and worse. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. - S.T.
(Note: This letter was shortened)

Dear S.T.,

It sounds like you have tried a lot of different methods to get her to sleep better - and all are wonderful. So I will try suggesting some more unconventional ideas...

Since whatever you drink enters the milk she is drinking I would suggest drinking about 3 cups of chamomile tea a day for a few days. This will help pretty much any problem she has (colic, too hot, tummy issues, anxiety, insomnia, etc...) without having to go through the detective work to figure out what it is. You can even spoon feed her (tip a little in her mouth with a spoon, babies love drinking this way) a spoon or two of the tea herself. If this gentle method does not work, you can also get some chamomile essential oil and mix 2 drops w/ a TBS. Of massage oil and rub it in a clockwise motion on her belly a couple times a day - especially at night. This always seemed to "drug" my kids into a deep sleep. I think it is the combination of the soothing massage and the effects of the oil. Hope this helps.

Also, this seems obvious but make sure you are not drinking any coffee or teas with caffeine. I didn't drink caffeine the entire 6 years I was nursing my three kids because I wouldn't get ANY sleep otherwise. Other things that can cause insomnia are: any foods with MSG (a lot of salad dressings at restaurants have this, Pizza Hut pizza sauce has this, I'm pretty sure Hye-Vee Deli uses this because their food keeps me awake all night if I eat it).

Blessings & Health,
Karima

Hemorrhoids & Classes: LETTER TO THE EDITOR

For Kind Attention of : Dr.Karima Burns

Hello,
In full appreciation to your wonderful articles and online education offers
and your 'Noble' service to the suffering patients,I wish to seek your assistance and learn more about health. Could you send me your IM ID so I could talk with you about this more?

I am interested to join your course. Do I get any Certificate (duration) after completion of the course? Do I need to pay for the course ?(If yes) How much ?

If any member undergoes consultation & treatment are they alloted any certificate too ? Do you have any suggestions for treating hemorrhoids?

Regards - IL

Dear IL,

Thank you for your kind note and your interest in my services.

I will do my best to answer your questions below:

1. You receive a professional certificate when you complete the course.
2. The course is on sale at this time for $250.00 (regular price is $350.00) at:
Islamic Healing Course Payment Page

3. You can also pay $35.00 per month via 12-monthly installments at:
Monthly Installments for the Islamic Healing Course

4. Treatment does not come with a certificate but it does come with 6-weeks of free follow-up e-mails and consulting.

5. I have an IM group for students of the Islamic Healing Course, but I do not do IM with any other people as my schedule is very tight.

6. For "hemorrhoids" I suggest the following:

A simple remedy is to make a compress of witch hazel extract. You should be able to get this at the pharmacy. Put it in the refrigerator so it stays cold. Put some on a cotton cloth and apply directly to the area. It will be quite shocking but will help relieve the swelling and constrict the veins. You can also calendula, St. John's wort and comfrey herb as a compress on the area.

If none of these herbs are available you can also try putting aloe Vera on the area. Also, drinking aloe Vera juice internally will help.

Some "kitchen remedies" (available everywhere) would be to take a nice warm bath infused with chamomile or calendula herbal tea.

Hope this helps!

Signatures of Fruits & Vegetables

Dear Sisters & Brothers,

I have always been amazed with the system of "signatures" in herbalism. This system was one of the ways herbs were identified in the times before the Prophet. People would identify herbs by the way they look (ginseng, which looks like a body is a body tonic...red herbs are usually good for the heart, etc...) Even today I use this simple method as a way of teaching children about herbs (and then we work up from there). Subhan Allah it is amazing the way God provides us with the information we need to heal ourselves!

I recently received an e-mail that talked about the "signatures" of food items as well. This is a good lesson in observation. Sometimes we are praying for a cure or an answer...and sometimes it is right in front of our eyes!

This is interesting info...

You are what you eat, so eat well. A stupendous insight of civilizations past has now been confirmed by today's investigative, nutritional sciences. They have shown that what was once called 'The Doctr ine of Signatures' was astoundingly correct. It now contends that every whole food has a pattern that resembles a body organ or physiological function and that this pattern acts as a signal or sign as to the benefit the food provides the eater. Here is just a short list of examples of Whole Food Signatures.

A sliced Carrot looks like the human eye. The pupil, iris and radiating lines look just like the human eye...and science shows that carrots greatly enhance blood flow to and function of the eyes

A Tomato has four chambers and is red. The heart is red and has four chambers. All of the research shows tomatoes are indeed pure heart and blood food.

Grapes hang in a cluster that has the shape of the heart. Each grape looks like a blood cell and all of the research today shows that grapes are also profound heart and blood vitalizing food.

A Walnut looks like a little brain, a left and right hemisphere, upper cerebrums and lower cerebellums. Even the wrinkles or folds are on the nut just like the neo-cortex. We now know that walnuts help develop over 3 dozen neuron-transmitters for brain function.

Kidney Beans actually heal and help maintain kidney function and yes, they look exactly like the human kidneys.

Celery, Bok Choy, Rhubarb and more look just like bones. These foods specifically target bone strength. Bones are 23% sodium and these foods are 23% sodium. If you don't have enough sodium in your diet the body pulls it from the bones, making them weak. These foods replenish the skeletal needs of the body.

Eggplant, Avocadoes and Pears target the health and function of the womb and cervix of the female - they look just like these organs. Today's research shows that when a woman eats 1 avocado a week, it balances hormones, sheds unwanted birth weight and prevents cervical cancers. And how profound is this? .... It takes exactly 9 months to grow an avocado from blossom to ripened fruit. There are over 14,000 photolytic chemical constituents of nutrition in each one of these foods (modern science has only studied and named about 141 of them).

Figs are full of seeds and hang in twos when they grow. Figs increase the motility of male sperm and increase the numbers of sperm as well to overcome male sterility.

Sweet Potatoes look like the pancreas and actually balance the glycemic index of diabetics.

Olives assist the health and function of the ovaries.

Grapefruits, Oranges, and other citrus fruits look just like the mammary glands of the female and actually assist the health of the breasts and the movement of lymph in and out of the breasts.

Onions look like body cells. Today's research shows that onions help clear waste materials from all of the body cells They even produce tears which wash the epithelial layers of the eyes.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Is Milk OK?

Dear Editor,

I've heard that milk is harmful to drink - what do you think? The hadiths all mention milk but my natural doctor says it is not good for me.

- NH

Dear NH

The hadiths are correct, of course, but they are speaking of the kind of milk that is fresh from the animal and not pasteurized - a BIG DIFFERENCE between THAT kind of milk and what we buy at the store. In fact, SO different that they should not even call the stuff on shelves in the market "milk"...perhaps "Milk-inspired-drink" would be more appropriate?

The only problem is that our stomach's are not so used to digesting this fresh raw milk so it can make a lot of people sick. Secondly, milk is not good for everyone. It can be good for some people in some situations but in all areas of nutrition you should always consider when and who it is good for. If the person has a cold with a runny nose or they are allergic to milk or cannot digest milk it would not be "good for them". So as far as the ultimate question - is it good for us? Yes, for some of us. But NOTHING is good for everyone. Everyone has their own nutritional needs based on their blood type, physiological type and other factors.

Hope this helps.
